Teaching assignment: Teachers will be assigned based on areas of training and expertise as they align with the needs of the program.
Hours of instruction: Classes at CBC – Changchun typically begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 4:00 p.m. with a mid-day break of roughly 2 hours. Teachers are also provided with 1 prep block during regularly scheduled classes each day. Most classes are semestered and occur in 40 or 80-minute blocks with teachers usually teaching 3 classes per day. This generally amounts to 5 or 6 40-minute blocks per day.
The School and Surrounding Area: Changchun Shiyi High School is located in the Lvyuan district of Changchun which has many places within walking distance for shopping, food, and entertainment. It is one of 6 main areas of Changchun which each offer similar amenities including well-developed public transportation in several forms. The area which literally translates to “green park”, has many nearby parks where people go to relax and enjoy the outdoors during warmer months (April-October). There is also a Western restaurant/pub within walking distance of the school, as well as a large shopping mall, several gyms, supermarkets, movie theatres, hospitals, and other entertainment venues. Teacher apartments are off-campus within walking distance (10 minutes), are modern and fully furnished, and meet all needs of foreign staff who are living abroad. Teachers generally walk or bike/e-bike to and from school. Very affordable transportation to other main areas in Changchun is readily available by taxi, subway, bus, or rental e-bike. Changchun is also close to many holiday destination cities including Harbin (known for skiing and the world-famous winter ice festival), Dalian (known for large, beautiful ocean beaches), Shenyang, and is at the center of an array of top ski/snowboard destinations in Northeast China. While Changchun is cold in the winter, this generally means that teachers and students enjoy a longer winter holiday during the coldest 6 weeks.
The Parent/Host School: Changchun Shiyi High School is a highly ranked school in Jilin province, known for strong sports, art, and music programs. The campus has a population of roughly 3000 students and 150 teachers. While many public school students live in dormitories, CBC program students generally live off-campus.
Canada British Columbia International Schools – Changchun: The CBC program operates out of a newly-renovated section of the school, and includes spacious, modern classrooms and a new computer lab with 30 computers. Teacher offices are also newly renovated with desktop computers provided and Wi-Fi access throughout the school. The support staff includes several Chinese colleagues who provide assistance with visas, work permits, apartment needs, parent contact, classroom needs, and some other issues as they might arise. Science labs, sports facilities, and auditoriums are booked by the BC program as a part of the host school schedule.
CBC – Changchun is fully supplied with BC textbooks and teacher resources for all subjects taught, along with a small library. CBC-Changchun teachers are also encouraged to engage with the system Professional Learning Community (PLC) which is an online platform connecting teachers from all campuses, and a great way to find and share resources. In addition, the school is very supportive of providing a blend of Western and Chinese experiences in a variety of extra-curricular events throughout the year.
